DEIA and Accessibility Practices

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility are integral to my teaching practices. I center my English courses on a diverse array of voices including authors of color, women and femme people, LGBTQIA+ authors, and undocumented authors. My intention is to create a classroom environment where all voices are heard and to encourage student connection with texts during discussion and major assessment writing. My writing prompts, notably English C1000’s essay 1 and 3, center student experience and curiosity. My projects like “Oral History Interview: Language Journey” with a community member allow students to seek knowledge in their communities. Finally, the zine project creates the opportunity for students to explore local activism efforts and re-mediate utilizing creative tools. I am currently working to make my online classroom more equitable as I now post my lectures on YouTube to make use of their captioning system. In addition, I seek to make my PDFs more in line with accessibility format. Currently, all my assignments in my online classroom are made using the Pope Tech tool.

Puente Mentor, 2026

I serve as mentor to a college student who is part of the Puente Program, a program that specializes in supporting first generation college students towards success in transferring to four year universities.

“Unconscious Bias” course, 2026

I am learning more in depth about unconscious bias and practices to be more aware of unconscious bias in the college campus environment.

“Ai Literacy for Educators” course, 2026

I am learning about how transparency and ethical use of ai tools can work in a college classroom. I hope to implement what I learn.

Culturally Responsive Teaching & Learning Committee

At this time, I am putting together resources for the Canvas toolkit which will be available to all Saddleback faculty and staff. I specialize in topics like "critical race theory,” “LGBTQIA+ Inclusive Classroom,” and “DACA and Undocumented Ally.”
